Why did the whole Catholic Priest/pedophilia scandal take so long become mainstream?

The Catholic Church has big, long arms, and deep, huge pockets. They kept the whole "helping Nazis escape justice" thing secret for so long...what's buying off a few parents to a malignant organization?
